How to Choose the Right Canvas: Comparing ECO, Cotton, and Linen Canvas

Comparing canvases — eco, cotton, and linen canvas

In brief: For your first attempts and smaller formats, a lighter ECO canvas is enough. For bold strokes, thick layers, and larger paintings, choose a heavier PROFI cotton canvas. Linen is stronger and more durable, making it the choice for oil painting and works meant to last for generations. Canvas board is for sketches and studies, while a roll lets you choose your own dimensions.

What’s the difference between ECO, cotton, and linen canvas?

Canvas For whom What it stands out for
ECO Stretched Canvas beginners, schools, trying out techniques lightweight, fine texture, double gesso-primed, affordable price
PROFI Stretched Canvas advanced artists and professionals 100% cotton from Italy, 370 g/m², double gesso priming, spruce stretcher frame 3.5 × 2 cm
NATURE Stretched Canvas those who want a natural look unbleached fabric with a natural shade
Linen MUSEAL Stretched Canvas oil painting, gallery works strong linen fibers, pronounced organic texture

When is ECO canvas enough?

ECO canvases are lightweight, with a fine texture and double gesso priming, so paint goes on smoothly. They’re ideal for your first attempts, smaller formats, sketching, and trying new techniques. They’re forgiving of mistakes and easy on your budget. For very energetic strokes and very thick layers, choose a heavier canvas instead.

Why choose a heavier PROFI cotton canvas?

Cotton is the most widely used painting surface in the world. It’s flexible, affordable, and has a regular texture that makes every brushstroke predictable. Our PROFI canvas is made from 100% Italian cotton with a weight of 370 g/m². It has first-class double gesso priming and is stretched over a sturdy spruce stretcher frame measuring 3.5 × 2 cm, with a center brace (larger formats also have a cross brace). It can handle dynamic strokes, a palette knife, and thicker layers of acrylic and oil paint.

  • Benefits of cotton: lower price than linen, natural flexibility, enjoyable to paint on.
  • What to keep in mind: cotton reacts more to moisture and can loosen over time. If that happens, keys can help (see how to tighten a loose canvas).

When is linen canvas worth choosing?

Linen is the traditional surface used by the old masters. Its fibers are longer and stronger, and react less to humidity and temperature, so the canvas is less likely to sag or loosen. Its irregular, organic texture adds depth and character to a painting. It costs more than cotton, but for oil painting and works intended for exhibition or sale, it is an investment in the work’s longevity, for example, MUSEAL Linen Canvas.

What Canvas Texture Is Best?

  • Fine – a smooth surface for details, portraits, and layering.
  • Medium – the most widely used, versatile for acrylic paints and oil paints, heavy body (thick) techniques, and transparent techniques.
  • Coarse – for working with a palette knife and applying thick layers of paint.

What Is Gesso-Primed Canvas, and Why Does It Matter?

Gesso is a primer that seals the canvas fibers. This keeps paint from soaking directly into the fabric, helping it stay on the surface and retain its brightness. Canvas primed with acrylic gesso can be used with acrylic paints and oil paints. All our stretched canvases are double-primed and ready to paint on.

What Canvas Size Should You Choose?

Medium formats such as 30 × 40 or 40 × 50 cm are a good choice for your first paintings and practice. For landscapes and abstract paintings, try 50 × 70 cm or larger; for series and gifts, choose small squares. We include keys free of charge with PROFI canvases from 50 × 70 cm. You can find the full range of sizes for each canvas in the canvas category.
