Drawing Ideas
Drawing is one of the most popular artistic activities. All you need is a pencil, paper, and a desire to explore the world of shapes and lines. Whether you’re just starting to draw or looking for fresh inspiration for your work, the right ideas can help you take the next step. We’ve put together a collection of drawing ideas and techniques to help you with your next drawing.
Drawing Supplies
Every work of art starts with a good sketch and the ability to draw on paper. For that, you need drawing supplies, or a drawing set. Our online store has a complete range of drawing supplies for kids, adults, professionals, and hobby artists. You can choose individual supplies or order a ready-made drawing set.
Think about which supplies best suit your drawing style and the techniques you use most often. If you enjoy drawing in detail, pencils, graphite pencils, and colored pencils may be a better choice. If you prefer to draw more quickly and freely, markers and charcoal may work better.
If you’re a beginner, start with paper, graphite pencils, colored pencils, markers, erasers, sharpeners, and sketching templates. We also recommend these products for kids. You’ll also find drawing tips on our site, including instructions on how to draw a butterfly.
When choosing a graphite pencil, pay attention to the markings on it. H indicates hard pencils, which are most often used in technical drawing for fine, clean lines. Pencils marked B are used for shading and darker lines. HB pencils are used for lines, coloring, and shading.
For more advanced artists, in addition to the products listed above, we recommend softer pencils and colored pencils for more precise drawing, watercolors, pastel paints, canvases, and other surfaces and supplies for painting and drawing available in our store.

Drawing Ideas
If you’re looking for simple subjects to draw, these ideas are a great way to get started:
- Drawing Flowers: Start with simple flower shapes, such as sunflowers. Use a pencil to sketch the basic shape, then add details such as veins on the petals and leaves.
- Simple Landscapes: Draw hills with trees and clouds on the horizon. Focus on basic shapes and lines with minimal detail.
- Silhouettes: Draw silhouettes of animals, trees, or people. This drawing style lets you experiment with contrast and negative space on the paper.
Now that you’ve warmed up, you can try drawing a realistic dog standing up.
Follow these steps:
Step One

The most important thing is to start with simple shapes.
To begin, draw 3 circles, as shown in the image, to define the proportions of the dog’s body correctly.
The two lower circles represent the dog’s body, and the top circle represents the head.

Then add a small circle to the dog’s head to represent the muzzle.
Draw everything with a lighter line so that when you add the outlines at the end, they stand out more than the initial basic shapes.
Connect the two lower circles with lines.
Step Two

Now add the dog’s legs and tail, as shown in the image.
Draw the front and back legs. Remember that a dog’s back legs are positioned a little differently from its front legs.
Step Three

In this step, we complete the dog’s head.
Draw the muzzle, eyes, and ears.
Since we’re drawing the dog in profile, draw only one eye and one ear.
You can draw the eye as a small triangle.
Draw the ear as a triangle too, using a ruler. See how it’s shown in the image.
Step Four

In this step, draw the basic outlines of the head and body, as shown in the image.
Use a darker pencil than the one you used to draw the geometric shapes at the beginning.
Use regular lines for the upper part of the body. Then, to create a realistic look for the lower part, shade with your pencil so the fur looks raised rather than flat like the top.
For the chest and belly, follow the circle from the initial sketch and adjust it slightly to get the right shape for this part of the dog’s body. The forehead, muzzle, and nose can be joined into one shape, as in the image. Add the tongue.
Then, to add volume to the legs that are closer to us as we look at the paper, draw outlines on both sides of the basic lines you previously drew for the legs. A dog’s legs are usually thicker at the top.
Drawing Ideas for Kids
Drawing is a great way for kids to have fun and express their imagination. Here are a few fun ideas that are sure to inspire them:
- Drawing Favorite Animals: Kids can draw their favorite animals, such as cats, dogs, or elephants, using basic shapes like circles and squares. Add fun details like hats or bows.
- Superheroes: Encourage kids to create their own superheroes with unique costumes, superpowers, and symbols. It’s a great exercise for their imagination.
- Drawing Nature: Kids can draw the sun, trees, birds, and flowers using bright colors and simple shapes. This activity helps them better understand the world around them.
Here are the steps your kids can follow to draw a little bunny with a carrot.
Step One

In the first step, draw the bunny’s head. Draw an oval shape for the head, as shown in the image. Add a pair of outward-curving, U-shaped ears to the upper half of the head.
Step Two

Add the eyes, nose, and mouth inside the oval. Draw the eyes as curved lines, the nose as a small triangle, and the mouth below the nose.
Step Three

Add the bunny’s arms at the sides of its head, and draw a carrot in one hand.
Step Four

Draw the bunny's body in a sitting position and add a little tail.
Step Five

Color in the drawing using colors of your choice. Color the inside of the ears pink and the carrot orange.
Pencil Drawing Ideas
Pencil drawing is one of the most basic and accessible art techniques, allowing you to express your creativity with minimal supplies. All you need to get started is a pencil and paper. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced artist, finding inspiration for a new drawing can sometimes be a challenge. In this blog, we'll explore a range of pencil drawing ideas to inspire you and get you creating interesting works of art.
Portraits and Self-Portraits

Drawing portraits is a classic subject that lets you explore human emotions and facial expressions. Start with simple profile or front-facing drawings, focusing on basic proportions and lines. Self-portraits are also a great way to practice, since you can analyze your own facial features and learn through regular observation.
Nature and Landscapes
Nature offers endless subjects to draw. Start with simple motifs, such as trees, flowers, or mountains. Try capturing different textures, such as the roughness of tree bark or the softness of flower petals. Landscapes let you experiment with perspective and depth, which can further improve your drawing skills.
Still Life
Still life is a great way to practice patience and attention to detail. Arrange a few objects, such as fruit, flowers, or books, and try to reproduce them accurately on paper. Focus on the light and shadows falling on the objects to help create a three-dimensional effect.
Abstract Drawings
If you want to free up your creativity and experiment with shapes, abstract drawing is ideal. Combine different lines, shapes, and textures to create unique compositions. This drawing style doesn't require you to stick closely to realistic forms. Instead, it lets you express your emotions and ideas freely.
Drawing Animals

Animals are great subjects to draw, especially if you want to practice anatomy and movement. Start with simple animals, such as cats or dogs, focusing on their basic shapes and features. Later, you can move on to more complex animals, such as birds or wild animals, and practice details and the textures of fur or feathers.
Architecture and City Sketches
Drawing architecture and city scenes is more challenging, but the results are worth it. Start by sketching building facades, streets, or bridges. Practicing perspective is key for these drawings, so try to focus on vanishing points and the proportions of different elements.
Geometric Shapes and Patterns
Geometric drawings are great for practicing accuracy and symmetry. Combine circles, squares, triangles, and other shapes to create complex patterns and compositions. This type of drawing is also relaxing, as it focuses your attention on repetitive movements and precise lines.
Comics and Illustrations
Drawing comics or illustrations can be a great way to express your creativity. Start with simple characters and stories, and practice conveying emotions and action through lines and expressions. Comics offer plenty of freedom in stylization and creative expression.
